Niagara Region West

About Niagara Region West

The Niagara Region West is bordered by Hamilton and Haldimand County to the west, Lake Ontario to the north and Lake Erie to the south. The rich soil, unique climate and natural features all contribute to some of the best farmland in the world. In addition, Niagara is famous for its wine industry.

The Niagara Region is rich in recreational activities. There are endless stretches of parks and beaches with ample walking and biking trails, scenic driving routes, and astounding wineries in some of the most beautiful countryside. With Lake Ontario and Lake Erie, there are also plenty of boating and fishing activities. On top of the Niagara Escarpment, Beamer Memorial Park has spectacular, panoramic views of Lake Ontario, in addition to a bird-watching area and hiking trails. Camping and swimming areas stretch along Long Beach Provincial Park. Sample some of the world’s best wine along the famous Wine Route.

Because the Niagara Region West lies between Lake Erie and Lake Ontario, the climate is considered moderate. This it is ideal for growing fruits, and the longer warm weather season allows for more time to enjoy recreational activities. Lake Ontario and Lake Erie store up heat during the summer months and release it in the winter to keep vineyards at just the right temperature, extending the fall growing season and preventing frost in the spring.

The main municipalities of Niagara Region West include Grimsby, Wainfleet, and West Lincoln. Grimsby lies between Lake Ontario and the base of the Niagara Escarpment. With a community of about 20,000, the small town atmosphere does not lack the modern amenities of a larger city. It is within commuting distance to the cities of St. Catherine and Hamilton, but with a lower cost of living. Houses range from $205,000 to $240,000. Wainfleet is a small, mainly agricultural community of about 6,000. It includes lively businesses, a great education system, and many amenities. Like Grimsby, it is also a popular bedroom community, but serves those who work in Welland, Port Colborne and St. Catharines. 2-storey starter homes go for about $125,000 and executive homes sell for $193,000. West Lincoln is home to about 12,000 residents. It is also an agricultural area, with industrial and commercial sectors. Both rural and urban housing options are available.
