Kitchener-Waterloo refers to the twin cities in southwestern Ontario, Canada. Waterloo is the smaller city, adjacent to Kitchener. The current population of Kitchener is over 200,000, whereas Waterloo has over 97,000 residents. Waterloo also has an additional post-secondary student population of 20,000. Along with Cambridge, they form Canada’s Technology Triangle that promotes not just technological industries but many other sectors of the economy. Waterloo in particular has hundreds of high-tech firms that form the background to a strong technology sector. Most notable is Research in Motion, innovators of the BlackBerry.

Kitchener-Waterloo has numerous cultural highlights including CAFKA (Contemporary Art Forum Kitchener and Area), Multicultural Festival, Open Ears Festival, and Blues, Brews & Barbecues all free to the general public. It’s also home to the Kitchener-Waterloo Art Gallery. This area is famous for the Kitchener-Waterloo Oktoberfest, an annual nine-day celebration held every October, running from the Friday before the Canadian Thanksgiving until the Saturday after. It includes many family and cultural events and is known for the Thanksgiving Day Parade. In addition, the Big Splash Waterpark is a great family attraction with mini-golf, go karts, bumper boats, batting cages, 10 waterslides and a wave pool. The Wings of Paradise Butterfly Conservatory boasts 1000’s of butterflies in a tropical garden and also features over 85 species of tropical plants, waterfalls, and a growing list of exotic birds. There are plenty of outdoor adventures available including many trails, fishing, golfing, skiing, and skating. The nearby Cambridge Heritage River Trail offers 50km of natural and urban trails, 18km along the historic Speed and Grand Rivers.

The Kitchener-Waterloo region hosts some of the finest academic institutions including the University of Waterloo, recognized as the most innovative university in Canada. Wilfrid Laurier University is another premier university which offers a unique, interdisciplinary approach to learning.
