Ontario is a province in central Canada and home to the spectacular Niagara Falls. It is the second largest province in Canada covering an area larger than Spain and France combined. It is also the largest province by population with more than 12 million people, one-third of the Canadian population. To the east, it shares its border with the province of Quebec, and to the west, it is bordered by the province of Manitoba. Ontario shares a natural border with the U.S. and it is the only Canadian province that borders with the Great Lakes.
Ontario’s landscape includes the vast, rocky and mineral-rich Canadian Shield, which covers two-thirds of this province. The Canadian Shield is the largest rock formation in Canada and also provides vast forest regions for the lumber industry and ideal areas for trapping and hunting. Also, there are over 250,000 lakes as well as countless rivers and streams in Ontario, which compose about one-third of the world’s fresh water.
Because of the abundance of natural resources and excellent transportation links, manufacturing is Ontario’s principal industry. Important products include iron, steel, electrical appliances, machinery, chemicals, and motor vehicles.
The capital of Ontario and the largest city in Canada is Toronto. Toronto is the financial hub for Canada’s financial services and banking industry. Ottawa, the capital of Canada, also lies in Ontario as well. Ottawa hosts a strong hi-tech industry. In fact, it is often known as “Silicon Valley North.”
Ontario is one of the most multicultural societies in the world. Festivals, such as West Indian’s Caribana and the German Oktoberfest, celebrate cultures from around the world throughout the year. In addition, there are also a variety of theatres and performing arts, seasonal festivals, country fairs, museums, floral gardens, theme parks, and well-known art galleries.
Ontario’s climate ranges from hot, humid summers to cold, chilling winters. Temperatures can reach up to 30°C in the summer, and drop below -40°C in the winter. The surrounding bodies of water, however, moderate the climate, making the summer and winter temperatures less extreme. The weather is marked also by considerable rain or snow throughout the year. Spring and fall are pleasantly mild with cool nights. Summer activities bring swimming, boating, baseball, hiking, camping, tennis and fishing. Popular winter sports include skating, skiing, curling, hockey and tobogganing.
An Ontario home is a perfect intersection between beautiful, grandeur landscapes and bustling, multicultural cities driven by a well-balanced economy. A recent MLS Listing in 2008 showed an average selling price of $313,000 for a home in Ontario. Specifically, an average single family home in the Toronto area goes for $380,000.
