Saint John is the largest city in the province of New Brunswick, with a population of about 100,000. It is located in south central New Brunswick at the mouth of the Saint John River, along the north shore of the famous Bay of Fundy. The Bay of Fundy boasts 18 metre high tides, the highest in the entire world. The river flows into the Bay of Fundy and produces diurnal tides that reverse the water flow of the river for many kilometers - a distinct phenomenon known as the Reversing Falls Rapids. Central Saint John contains the historic downtown along with its brightly coloured wooden houses as well as newer developments near Churchill Square and the Baird. The area around Churchill Square is a great location – walking distance to both downtown and the university. The nearby towns of Paradise, St. Phillips and Portugal Cove are communities that are characterized by low density housing along either the coast or main roads. Parkland exists around the majority of ponds in Paradise.
The Climate in St John is temperate continental. The winter temperatures are moderated by the Bay of Fundy, which never fully freezes. Yet, because of the strong winds, the temperature still reaches -7°C. Summers range from cool to moderately warm and temperatures do not go over 25°C.
