Moncton is located in the Petitcodiac River Valley in the province of New Brunswick, in the southeast and at the geographical centre of the Maritime Provinces. It is one of the top ten fastest growing cities in Canada. With a population of 126,424, including the neighbouring areas of Dieppe and Riverview, it is the second largest metropolitan area in New Brunswick.
At the core of the city is Moncton's downtown, full of historic buildings, night clubs, and restaurants. Downtown is also home to a newly restored Capitol Theatre which hosts a variety of shows, concerts and ballet. On the outskirts, Moncton is full of natural wonders including the world’s largest tides at the Bay of Fundy. Moncton’s most popular park is Centennial Park, notable for its artificial beach, cross country skiing and hiking trails, the city’s sole football field with artificial turf called Rocky Stone Field and the city’s largest playground. The other three large recreational parks are Mapleton, Irishtown Nature Park and Riverfront Park. All of these parks provide beautiful trails suitable for walking and jogging. In the northwest is the city’s most renowned attraction named Magnetic Hill, a gravity hill or type of optical illusion where slight downhill slopes appear uphill. The gravity hill and its surrounding theme park amuse both adults and children.
Moncton’s economy is fueled by a variety of industries, primarily transportation, retailing, distribution and commercial heritage. Other sectors such as health care, financial, information technology, insurance and education also strengthen the economy. The stable economy has received national recognition, and the unemployment rate continues to be less than the national average.
The climate of Moncton appears more continental during the summer and winter, as opposed to the expected maritime climate given Moncton's proximity to the ocean. Winters are cold but for the most part, still sunny. The coming of spring is often hampered by the nearby sea ice. Summers are hot and humid and daytime highs can reach over to 30°C.
Moncton offers a variety of affordable and quality housing that contributes to Moncton’s low cost of living, considered one of the best in Canada. Moncton real estate costs are among the most favorable in all of North America. A recent MLS Listing in 2008 showed an average selling price of $160,000 for a property in Moncton.
