About Winnipeg

Winnipeg is the capital and largest city of the province of Manitoba. It is located in Western Canada, specifically the eastern prairie region. It is often known as the “Gateway to the West.” It lies close to Lake Winnipeg, the world’s eleventh largest lake.

Winnipeg is one of Canada’s most culturally diverse cities with a variety of neighbourhoods. The Forks is the most popular neighbourhood as well as the city’s main waterfront area, vibrant with shops, festivals, outdoor activities and entertainers. The Wellington Crescent neighbourhood is lined by elegant trees and mansions. Corydon Avenue is home to Little Italy, and although it has since diversified, its main attraction is still food, and the neighbourhood is filled with the highest number of restaurants in all of Winnipeg.

Chinatown is located in the Princess and King neighbourhood and filled with terrific restaurants, exotic foods, import stores, all centered around the Chinese Cultural Centre. The Osborne Street community has its share of high-rise apartments. Downtown, there is the residential community of West Broadway. New townhomes and condominiums have been on the rise throughout the city, especially in the established neighbourhoods of Old St. Boniface, Winnipeg’s French Quarter, Osborne Village and Fort Rouge. The Exchange District has been surging with loft style condos converted within warehouse buildings.

Winnipeg has a rich cultural and sporting life, but without the big city pollution or traffic congestion. Many of the natural attractions are not crowded. There are over 2.5 million acres of parkland as well as more than 100 golf courses. In addition, fisherman can go for great catches at one of the 100,000 pristine lakes in the province. The desert sand dunes near Carberry provide great hikes, and the sandy beaches provide many great strolls. Notably, one of the best in all of North America is Grand Beach on Lake Winnipeg. Bird watching is also a popular activity at the Oak Hammock Marsh boardwalks. Because of its abundance, you can always find a getaway spot.

Aside from the natural attractions filled with recreational activities, Winnipeg is also has an active arts and theatre community. It hosts the Winnipeg Art Gallery, the Manitoba Museum, the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra and the Manitoba Opera Company. The renown Royal Winnipeg Ballet performs all over the world. There are also many cultural festivals outside of the theatre such as Folklorama, the world’s largest multicultural festival.

The climate of Winnipeg is a humid continental climate. Autumn and spring have many variations and summers and winters are long. Winnipeg has temperatures averaging from around -14°C in winter to 26°C in summer.

Winnipeg enjoys one of the most diverse housing markets in Canada. Although current real estate prices in Canada are on the rise, the diversity provides an affordable real estate option, and though prices vary, they sit below the national average. New single family homes are approximately $259,000.
