Red Deer, Alberta, population 82,772, is located midway between Calgary, AB and Edmonton, AB on the Red Deer River. Originally named Red Deer Crossing the city took root as the best ford for the Red Deer River. This influence on transportation continued as the Calgary and Edmonton Trail and later the Calgary Edmonton Railroad used this crossing point. Today Red Deer serves as a transportation centre for the distribution of oil and agricultural products produced in the surrounding area. It is also a major centre for petrochemical production.
The Queen Elizabeth II Highway provides easy access to Edmonton and Calgary both about 150 kilometers distance. The David Thompson Highway (Hwy 11) provides good transportation to locations east and west of Red Deer including Banff National Park.
