About Alberta

Alberta is one of two inland provinces in Canada. There are two major metros, Calgary and the provincial capital of Edmonton, located on this high plateau province, each with over 1 million people. They are also considered among Canada’s major transportation and commerce centers.

Alberta is world famous for its distinct natural landmarks, especially the Alberta’s Rocky Mountains. Alberta is home to world famous resort and recreation areas, including Jasper and Banff National Parks with acres of Boreal Forest, towering mountain ranges, and the romantic Lake Louise. The desert topography contains numerous discovery opportunities and countless fossils so Alberta is home to the Royal Tyrrell Museum of Palaeontology. Edmonton hosts the West Edmonton Mall, North America’s largest shopping and entertainment complex with over 800 stores and 100 dining possibilities. Just one hour away from Edmonton, Elk Island National Park of Canada is a beautiful oasis and home to roaming bison, moose, deer, elk, and over 250 species of birds.

Alberta's economy is also fueled by the petroleum industry and the oil sands in the north and agriculture to the south. As a center for commerce in oil and agriculture, Alberta is a well-connected transportation hub. Calgary and Edmonton International Airports serve flights to other major cities in the United States, Canada, and the rest of the world. Highway 2 is the largest transportation corridor to the United States in the region, and the East West Trans-Canada highway system also passes conveniently by the major metro centers.

The climate of Alberta is reflective of a high altitude environment in the north. The area gets good precipitation, resulting in great skiing conditions during the winter. Temperatures range from -10°C in the winter to a more temperate 21°C in the summer. This is the perfect climate for a wide variety of outdoor recreation. In fact, Alberta is known for its world-class ski slopes, hiking trails, all in crisp mountain air making it a popular location for tourists and Canadians alike.

Alberta’s combination of economic growth, the lowest tax rates in Canada, and great outdoor recreation results in an area of high income and property values, but also a high quality of life. While not the most expensive market for real estate in Canada, the economic growth in the province has resulted in a robust real estate market. An average single family home in Calgary sells for about $470,000 and for $400,000 in Edmonton.
